‘A labor of love’: Awasu mechanic makes trophies out of late brother’s auto parts | News

Local mechanic Tim Clark recently repurposed a pile of old auto parts to honor his late brother.

Clark designed a variety of pistons, chains, lug nuts and metal clips in commemorative awards for Magalassi Foundation winners at the 2022 Car, Truck, and Bicycle Suicide Awareness Show held at the beginning of September.

The longtime technician has selected every single piece of vehicle he and his brother Matt have worked on at Randy’s Performance Repair in Owasso over the past several years.

“He was a true artist in the metalworking and auto industry,” Clark said of Matt, who passed away of COPD in April 2021 at the age of 61. His brother’s auto parts, that was his last stage of auto show.”

Clarke teamed up with his girlfriend and colleague, Tara Newby, the event coordinator for the Magalassi Foundation’s car show, who asked him to put together a handful of trophies with additional auto parts. Unbeknownst to her at the time, Clark had something bigger in mind.

A quest that lasted for weeks surprised Newby when she discovers Clark has altered family memories that will be preserved for years to come.

“These awards are beautiful to look at, no doubt about that,” Newby said. “You can feel the love, compassion and affection he poured out on them. Not only is his artistic prowess shown in these artworks, but his heart as well.”

Clarke drafted the awards and along with his wife and three children, Clarke partnered with Clarmore-based Strike An ARC Welding & Fabrication to make We Matter tape and winning numbers and sprayed them with suicide awareness colours, purple and turquoise.

“It’s a good reason…it’s a very special (car) show,” Clark said. “It bothered me to see the awards disappear, but to see the smiles on people’s faces, and it was all worth it.”

When asked what Clark’s work meant for her, Tara replied, “I will always cherish him. I will forever be grateful to know him and have the honor to call him my friend.”
