There has been quite a bit of showing up in the batting genre lately. 2020 brought us Streets of Rage 4the series that has been dormant since 1994. A year earlier, River City Girls Hit the scene, cross the Kunio Kon (River City) Franchise business. The game was popular enough to greenlight a sequel, which is due out sometime this year. For content-hungry fans, though, the developer way forward He released an English outlet titled Super Famicom, Shin Nikitsu Koha: Kunio-tachi no Bankait is now called River City Girls Zero. River City Girls Zero It was released on the Nintendo Switch earlier this year, but I had a chance to review the adventure for the first time on other platforms. I’m sorry to say it was a horrible experience.
Prequel’s Tale Shows Humble Beginnings
River City Girls Zero It begins with the opening of a new anime, complete with a song telling the player that this is part of an old game. WayForward brings the point home further with a comic book cinematic scene featuring River City Girls themselves, Misako and Kyoko. The pair pull off a Super Famicom to play during their first adventure with their friends Kunio and Ricky. It’s a nice and humorous way to introduce players to the story. This extends to the translation used in the proper game, which has some funny dialogues.
As far as the main plot goes, Kunio and Ricky are framed for hit and run. They are put in prison and must escape and clear their names. Along the way, they pick up Misako and Kyoko as playable characters. The group traverses schools, amusement park, highway, club, and other locations as they fight for justice. This game represents the first time River City The series used realistic sprites and a serious story, so don’t expect enemies to explode coins and shout “BARF!”
When it comes to playing, River City Girls Zero She has some interesting ideas. Instead of lives, players can switch to any of the four heroes as soon as they encounter them. If you get kicked like Kunio, for example, you can switch to Reiki while his health slowly fills up. Each character can perform two unique special moves without draining a life either. There are also differences depending on the gender of the hero. Enemies cannot catch the ladies, while the men can beat the bad guys on the ground and hit them with punches.
Unfortunately, it’s all about him River City Girls Zero It is subpar. The levels are short and very restrictive. For example, you will be in one area, get rid of some enemies, move to the right, but no exit appears. You will then realize that you need to retreat and fight more enemies from where you entered, but no arrow appears indicating that you have to.
Motorcycle stages are really bad and it’s a chore. The turns are tight, and if you don’t slow down, you’ll hit the side of the road and die instantly. There is also a park-wide section which is absolutely insane. You have to climb the ferris wheel (you need to press a button after jumping to grab the ledges, by the way) and fight enemies while the benches crush you to the sides. Believe me, your friends will hate you if you make them play this section in co-op.
Even hitting gang members with mucus, an essential ingredient in River City The chain loses its luster here. Punches and kicks feel delayed and delayed. There are instances when you can inhale a punch at someone because they are a pixel above your level of being. There are no weapons to pick up and use. And if you run out of life with any of the four characters, it’s game over. Fortunately, you have an unlimited number of Follows that will leave you at the beginning of the section you were in, as well as a password system. WayForward added the ability to save and finish anywhere, which is basically a save system. You will be sure to abuse this, as the difficulty of the game escalates very quickly.
Review Verdict on River City Girls Zero
River City Girls Zero It is a product of its era but in a bad way. Sure, it’s nice to have a few new scenes, and additional promotional materials (square art, craft photos, etc.) available in the menu is a nice touch. However, it is not enough to memorize this game. WayForward has to completely redesign this title to make it worth playing. I understand that its resources may be used primarily in River City Girls 2. If that’s the case, I’d recommend everyone to avoid this old adventure and just replay River City Girls repeatedly.
