Check out these epic vintage photos of cars flying through the air at the Nürburgring

For many drivers, riding the Nürburgring means taking off from the curb.

Especially in the past, the Nürburgring has been dubbed the “Green Hell” by many in the racing world for being the most challenging track in motorsport. Whether it’s the narrow lengths of the German course, successive twisting sections, or dramatic elevation changes throughout the track, it is one of the toughest and longest courses to master, and is respected around the world by brands, teams, racing series and fans. Most of the pictures of the Nürburgring are epic shots simply because of the nature of the track and the racing on it, but especially in the old racing days where cars and tracks had fewer safety restrictions and less downforce, some scenes were very special. While it’s great that today’s racers are faster and safer, there’s nothing quite like the intensity of seeing a car catching air, even if it’s just for a second, and that’s what all of these cars and drivers delivered on the track.

These photos were taken at various events of the Nürburgring 1000 km, and the photo above is from 1974, from a BMW 3.0 CSL driven by Hans-Joachim Stuck and Jacky Ickx, with the iconic sports car lifted high on the curb at this incredible moment.

This is another Porsche 911 Carrera RSR driven by George Los and John Fitzpatrick, and in this epic moment, it looks like the 911 has just rolled off the curb as it climbs a hill at breakneck speed. Especially with the rear-mounted Porsche 911 engine, sheer driving skill and bravery were required to pull this off.

The upward angle of the Ferrari as it moves through the air makes us hardly see the driver’s helmet in this photo. Pedro Rodriguez and Chris Amon raced the 1,000km Nürburgring in 1969, and the excitement of the airborne race car without a roof must have been nothing short of exhilarating.
