Here’s why the revolutionary BMW i8 is a guaranteed classic of the future

The stunning BMW i8 Coupe was a highly anticipated development. From car model to full road production model, this was BMW’s first attempt at developing a fast sports car with advanced hybrid electric technology. The BMW i8 had electric performance

The BMW i8 comes with a 1.5-cylinder, three-cylinder turbo engine located at the rear of the car and an electric motor at the front, both generating 231 hp and 131 hp respectively. This equates to a total power output of 362 horsepower and an impressive 420 lb-ft of torque to all four wheels. The combustion engine transmits power to the rear wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission, while the electric motor drives the front wheels via a two-speed automatic transmission. BMW classifies this as a ‘specified hybrid all-wheel drive’

The massive torque from the electric motor increases the i8 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds and hits 155 mph. It does, however, boast an impressive “real” economy of 40 mpg, although it’s a far cry from BMW’s somewhat optimistic claims on paper. The i8 has undoubtedly succeeded in delivering supercar performance at the cost of running a small city car. Weighing in at 3,200 pounds, the i8 has a smart, lightweight build and architecture that ensure perfect weight distribution.

The BMW i8 is a pioneering design concept with an emphasis on efficiency. Although it includes all the hallmarks of a supercar, it was never intended to be a drifting machine nor did it go off to achieve a seven-minute lap in the Nordschleife like the Porsche 918 Spyder. The i8 certainly isn’t nearly as satisfying to drive as some sports cars. However, it has the agility, balance and straight-line electric performance to keep up with the 911 Carrera. The only anomaly with the formula is the steering, which lacks feedback.

The i8’s design was out of this world

Without a doubt, the i8 is all about aerodynamics. It’s true to say, there’s nothing quite like it on the road. In fact, The i8’s design language is heavily influenced by the BMW M1 Hommage Concept Car. The design is a mixture of intricate surfaces, contrasting colors and sharp, distinct wrinkles.

Furthermore, the attention to detail and skilful execution of shapes are impressive, as is the intricate design around the brake lights. Then you have the stunning biplane doors that add to the stage.

The i8 uses a lightweight chassis made from a combination of aluminum, carbon fiber and thermoplastic. Furthermore, the short overhangs, 20-inch alloys and wide body provide an aggressive look.

Arguably, the i8 roadster variant is the better-looking of the two.

Futuristic design flows into the cabin

Futuristic design flows into the i8’s cabin with unique and futuristic touches, comfortable seats and a stylish dashboard. Moreover, they are well-equipped with the latest technology. Not surprisingly, the i8 shares most of its panels with other, lesser-range BMW models.

However, the digital speedometer and tachometer provide clear information. Moreover, the i8 also benefits from the rear seats, which are more suitable for small children or better used as extra luggage space. With a rear cargo hatch of 154 liters, the space is somewhat inadequate, with enough room for a small suitcase.

In addition, getting in and out of the car requires a different rhythm of movement than that of a conventional sports car. This is mainly due to the angle of the scissor doors and the low seating position.

BMW i8 is a flawed super sports car

Despite the i8’s loyal followers, many considered the BMW i8 a commercial failure. Some would argue that the BMW i8 was ahead of its time and the global market simply wasn’t ready for this futuristic machine. Then there was the exorbitant price tag of $150,000, which many considered too much for a three-cylinder hybrid sports car, significantly dropping its value.
