Historic Tour De Cebu returns on September 29, 2022 – Manila Bulletin

The golden era of motorsports in the 1960s and 1970s, featuring some of the most iconic car designs and some brands that are now just shadows of their former selves, may have been missed by many. However, it is not too late to experience or witness it nowadays and on the beaches of the Philippines.

Once a year, the Tour de Cebu brings together some of the country’s most well-maintained classic sports cars for an epic road race through the Visayan Islands.

Last held in 2019, the Tour De Cebu is back and hoping to continue the historic motor rally that has come to be known by its name, which spans nearly 1,000 kilometres. The official announcement came at the Manila Polo Club where some of the actual participating cars from Manila were shown.

The rally will take place from September 29 to October 3, 2022. The event is organized by the Performance and Classic Enthusiasts (PACE) in Cebu and the Manila Sports Car Club (MSCC). It highlights the beautiful roads and highways as well as the many scenic spots that the Visayan Islands have to offer.

Inspired by Italy’s Mille Miglia (1000 mile) event, the Tour de Cebu is a time-distance (TSD) rally. Rather than racing to checkpoints as quickly as possible, TSD pools require participants to reach the checkpoints at a predetermined time. Usually, driving at speed limits is required, with penalty points awarded for those arriving early or late at said checkpoints. The team with the lowest penalty kick score will be the winner. It may sound boring, but arriving at a predetermined time is more difficult than driving away. It also gives cars with smaller engines an equal footing with cars with larger engines or larger cylinders. In addition, it guarantees safety for competitors, priceless classic cars, and other road users.

Tour de Cebu was conceived as a celebration of a decade of friendship between members, or PACE. The Anniversary Fun Race entailed driving through really special roads and the sheer fun of the event is what turned it into the unique, safe, and chauffeur-driven event for the wild tourism it is known today.

Although organized by two of the country’s most exclusive motoring clubs, the Tour de Cebu is open to all enthusiasts of sports cars manufactured in 1972 or earlier. Basically, any vehicle that has historically participated in the Mille Miglia is allowed. This means that classic cars such as Porsche 356, Alfa Romeo Giulia, Mercedes-Benz SLs, Ferrari Dino 246s, and the like are allowed. However, even cars that didn’t participate in the Mille Miglia but have a sporting heritage like the Chevrolet Corvette (C2) 427 Stingray, Datsun 240Z or even the Morgan 3-wheeler are most welcome.

Eligible sports cars are based on the official list compiled by the Manila Sports Automobile Club. However, PACE grants limited exceptions to classic cars of high historical value or a unique source in the country as well as sports car models or cars whose manufacturing periods extend beyond the 1972 final date.
