A shelter-in-place in the Billy Crossroads area of Fairfax County, Virginia, has ended after two unmanned vehicles were shot in a parking lot Friday morning.

According to the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Department, officers were called near South Jefferson Street and FA.

For much of the afternoon, a multi-machine police response searched for the source of the shooting. FCPD Lt. Daniel Spital said what investigators initially believed were “high-powered rifle rounds” found at the scene identified as being fired from a handgun.

No one is hurt.

Kristi King of WTOP describes the scene from Bailey’s Crossroads.

Spital said early witness reports of the shooting from an elevated position, along with the possible involvement of a gun, prompted police to ask the surrounding community for protection at the scene. Forensic analysis later revealed that two rounds found inside two separate vehicles were pistol shots, likely fired from somewhere on the ground.

“We no longer believe it was a high-powered rifle round, we think it was a pistol round, which changes our analysis, and we no longer believe it was a high-powered shot,” Spital told WTOP.

Law enforcement searched a high-rise apartment complex across the street on Seminar Road, where the shots were initially thought to have come. Armored police vehicles from Fairfax and Arlington counties were seen in the area. For much of the afternoon, a Fairfax County police helicopter flew over the Northern Virginia neighborhood.

Spital told a news briefing late Friday that investigators do not believe that any particular person was targeted in the shooting. Police remained at the scene trying to locate the shooting, and Spital asked the public to report any suspicious activity.

“While you are still seeing a heavy police presence in the area, this is just as our investigation continues,” Spital said. “We have some active potential clients that we’re following. We don’t have a suspect at this time, but we’re still combing through a lot of evidence, and we’re asking for the public’s help.”
