Camaro vs Mustang

See if classic muscle cars have what it takes to beat their modern-day rivals

Some of the best classic and modern muscle cars from Ford, Chevrolet and Dodge take their beef to the drag strip to see who’s the best.

The old versus new debate extends to many things, including muscle cars. Some people prefer vintage classic cars, while others believe that newer muscle cars are far superior to their older counterparts.

One of the best ways to settle any dispute about muscle cars is to pit them against each other in drag racing. This is exactly what Wheels did on her YouTube channel. They posted a video showing several drag races, each with a classic muscle car lined up against a modern muscle car.

The debate over the old versus the new

The first race is a battle between green machines. Barracuda Plymouth competes for the sixth generation Ford Mustang GT. Barracuda jumps off the line so fast that the Mustang seems to have fallen asleep. The Mustang finishes off the distance and takes the win in 8.74 seconds at 161.31 mph versus 9.21 seconds at 146.71 mph for the Barracuda.

Next Race features a 1960s Pontiac Firebird and the latest generation Dodge Challenger SRT 392 Scat Pack. Traction seems to be an issue as the wheel spinning sound is emitted throughout the first part of the race. In the end, the Firebird took a victory in 13.16 seconds at 108.60 mph versus 13.30 seconds at 110.03 mph for the Challenger.

The third race is the Chevy vs. Chevy. The 1973 Chevrolet Nova SS lines up with the 2016 Chevrolet Corvette. Nova raises its front wheels at the start of the race and the Bow Tie muscle cars stay even throughout the race. It finishes with the winning Nova in 10.52 seconds at 127.07 mph versus the Corvette’s 10.92 seconds at 125.99 mph.

The fourth race has a 1960s Pontiac Firebird that quickly jumped over a stream model black Dodge Challenger Widebody. But Dodge rolls in a Pontiac at the end and finishes winning in 12.55 seconds at 121.01 mph. The Firebird finished second in 13.28 seconds at 104.00 mph.

Some old racing cars vs new muscle cars

The next race is another Chevrolet affair against Chevy, this time between the 1963 Chevrolet Nova and the 2019 Chevrolet Camaro. The race is even at the start, but the Camaro pulls away at the halfway point and finishes well over the Nova. The Camaro finishes with 12.03 at 122.05 mph and Nova crosses the line at 13.46 at 111.13 mph.

Next up is a match between the latest Dodge Challenger SRT 392 Scat Pack and the old-school Chevrolet Camaro SS. This race is very close with a very slim victory for Dodge in 11.28 seconds at 121.44 mph versus 11.45 at 118.02 for Chevy.

The seventh match between the 1980 Buick Regal Grand National against the modern Chevrolet Camaro. Buick gets a leadership lead off the streak, but Camaro scores it to victory in the end with 10.67 at 134.67 versus 11.59 at 116.05 mph for Buick.

The next race sees two Fords go into it. A sixth-generation Shelby Ford Mustang GT500 and a classic Mustang from the early 1970s. The older Mustang seems to have some issues as it crashes early in the race. This allows the new-school Mustang to enjoy a big win with a 10.24 at 136.96 mph while the older Stang took 14.13 at 103.98 mph.

The ninth race features another modern Chevrolet Camaro that competes with the old-school Chevrolet Nova SS. That’s a clear win for the Nova with 10.46 at 128.04 versus the Camaro’s 11.24 at 124.82 mph.

The results thus show 3 victories for vintage muscle cars and 6 victories for modern muscle cars.
